Dear 2019 MALCS Summer Institute Registrants,

We are very excited to welcome you to the 2019 MALCS Summer Institute!

The Summer Institute will be held at the UMass Amherst Integrated Learning Center Building (ILC – floors 1, 2, 3 & 4) and the Old Chapel as well as Smith College’s Campus Center where the Tortuga Dinner will occur. Weblinks to campus maps are located below.

  2. Weather Updates
    The weather will be hot and humid with the chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday, so please bring an umbrella, just in case. Also, check weather.com for pollen levels:

  3. Dorms Details
    For participants staying overnight at UMass housing, please note that dorms rooms will be located in the North Residential Area, specifically building “North A” and check-in will occur right next door in building “North C” first floor, which is staffed 24/7.

Parking passes for overnight stays will also be available at the time you check-in (please note there is also a Northeast Residential Area – this is NOT where our MALCS dorms will be located). Please see UMass campus map for the specific location of the North Residential Area:

  1. Registration & Parking
    The Summer Institute Registration will take place in the Integrative Learning Center (ILC) building on the 3rdFloor in the Communication Department HUB:
    Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 1:00PM – 6:00PM
    Friday, July 19, 2019 from 8:00AM – 5:00PM
    Saturday 20, 2019 from 8:00AM – 5:00PM

Parking Passes are available at check-in

Summer Institute badges must be worn for admission to all sessions, receptions, events, and the Tortuga Award Dinner. Badges are obtained through the pre-payment of registration fees and will be available at the Summer Institute registration table.

Free parking passes will be available for specific parking lots (25, 26, 33, 22, 44, 49) and passes can be obtained at the SI registration check-in table. The parking pass is also attached below as a reference. If you wish to park closer to ILC, then we recommend parking at the Campus Garage, which costs $1.75 per hour and can be paid when you exit the garage.

  1. Meal Details
    Pastries, fruit and coffee will be available on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 from 8:00AM – 10:00AM in the Integrative Learning Center (ILC) building on the 3rdFloor in the Communication Department HUB. Lunch tickets for the Franklin Dining Commons will also be provided on Friday and Saturday July 19-20, 2019 and they will be distributed at the end of each plenary. Both the opening and closing receptions will also have appetizers (Puerto Rican food on Saturday evening), and dinner will be included in the Tortuga Award celebration.

  1. Wi-Fi Network
    UMass Amherst is equipped with eduroam, but access to the Wi-Fi Network on campus – “UMASS” – will also be provided. Login details will be located in the program and at the registration check-in table. Make sure your wireless adapter is set to dynamically obtain an IP address.

Please be aware that due to shifting weather conditions in the New England area, when there is a thunderstorm, the Wi-Fi Network on campus may be interrupted. We advise all presenters to save their presentations on a USB Flash Drive if possible and to have a printed version of your paper at hand, if applicable.

  1. Bus Schedule for Friday’s Tortuga Award Dinner at Smith College
    Buses will be available for transportation to Smith College for the Tortuga Award Dinner on Friday, July 19, 2019. Details will be located in the program and are also provided below:

6:00PM – Bus Arrives at North Residential Area
6:15PM – Bus Departs from North Residential Area
6:45PM – Bus Arrives at Smith College — John M. Greene Hall bus stop
7:00PM – 9:00PM – Tortuga Awards Dinner
9:15PM – Bus Arrives at Smith College — John M. Greene Hall bus stop
9:30PM – Bus Departs from Smith College — John M. Greene Hall bus stop
10:00PM – Bus Arrives at Residential Area

  1. Childcare
    Childcare will be available both Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 from 8:00AM – 5:00PM. All parents will be required to sign and submit the Childcare Liability Waiver before any child is permitted to remain with childcare providers. Childcare drop-off will be in ILC N352.
